Welcome Letter

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the 2023-2024 School year! I want to introduce myself as the AVID Coordinator for the AVID Academy at Chester W. Nimitz Middle School. I have been with the Los Angeles Unified School District for over 27 years and this is my first year as a full-time AVID Coordinator and College and Career Coach.  While teaching is a craft that I thoroughly enjoy, I also understand that I can provide more opportunities for all of our students on a larger scale.  Because every child learns differently and at their own pace, I will make every effort to support your son/daughter throughout their middle school journey by providing them with equal opportunities.

AVID is a program dedicated to helping students succeed in academic areas.  It specializes in giving ALL of our students the opportunity to learn skills that will get them college and career-ready for our 21st-century challenges.  Our program focuses on rigor through WICOR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading) strategies to prepare our students to excel in all of their classes.  All of our AVID Academy teachers receive continuous training that is specific to their content areas.  AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
